The city of Odessa is located on the Black Sea. It is situated on terraced hills overlooking a small harbour, approximately 31km to the North of the estuary of the Dniester River and some 443km to the South of the Ukrainian capital city Kiev. Administratively, the city of Odessa is a capital city of the Odessa Region which is the largest in Ukraine: its total area is 33,300km2 (an approximate size of Belgium or Switzerland), which is about 5.5% of Ukraine's territory.
As result of its tourism-recreation potential, the Odessa region is one of the leading regions of Ukraine. Tourism is one of Ukraine's fastest growing industries. It has become one of the key factors driving the Ukrainian economy.
Odessa is the largest and most important harbour of Ukraine. There are ferry crossings connecting Odessa's port with Turkey and Greece. According to the common classification parameters, the port is considered to belong to the largest ones class.
Odessa is one of Ukraine's economic centres which has a large sea port, developed industry, resort and recreation complex, transport, financial and social infrastructure. Odessa is mostly deals with transport and international export trade.
In Odessa, there is a branch of the National Bank of Ukraine and over 24 commercial banks, including the branches and departments of 21 insurance companies, a branch Ukraine stock-exchange. Furthermore there are over 467 foreign capital joint ventures within the city.
In comparison to other cities of the Ukraine, Odessa has started on its business development much earlier, and has achieved great results.
